The Web site links have been researched, evaluated, and annotated by Rio Hondo College Librarians. Law Dictionaries Dictionary

Nolo Press, a publisher of do-it-yourself legal solutions, provides this glossary (specialized dictionary) of legal terms.  Searchable by term of A to Z index.

General Legal

A subject guide of Internet legal resources. Includes law schools, Cases and Codes, Legal Practice Materials, resources by state, legal associations, etc.  Notice the tabs at the top  of the page 'For Public' and 'For Legal Professionals.'

Guide to Law Online -- Law Library of Congress
The Web site is an annotated guide to Internet sites on government and law, including national and international law.  This site has an 'Ask a Librarian' button.

Villanova Legal Express
Villanova University School of Law hosts Legal Express covering legal magazines and news ; law search portals ; subject guides ; general references ; law schools and libraries, etc.  The legal portal page has an extensive list of legal sites.


National Archives and Records Administration--Code of Federal Regulations
CFR can be searched by keyword or citation.

U.S. Supreme Court Opinions
Access is provided by FindLaw. Search by name, citation, or keywords.

USA.Gov Laws and Regulations = General Reference Resources - Government made easy Website for Federal Laws and Regulations.  Top of page tabs 'Focus for Citizens', 'Businesses and Non-Profits', 'Government Employees' and 'Visitors to the U.S.'  Has Search field in upper right-hand corner for


Ballot Pamphlets On-Line
Includes the ballot pamphlet texts, summaries, and arguments for elections from 1996 to the present.  Also includes a link to the University of California Hastings College of Law database of California ballot measures from 1911 to the present.

The official Web site for the California Courts.  This Web site includes “slip” opinions, judicial council rules and forms, court calendars, job openings, etc.

Provides access to the online catalog for the L.A. Law Library and literally hundreds of links to other Web sites that are law related such as California Legislative history, legal forms, guides for various legal topics, etc.

Legal Advice and Aid

Free Advice
A resource for consumers seeking legal advice.  Voted by USA Today as "the most useful consumer legal site".  Provides general legal information in 100 legal topics.  Also includes a section for legal forms.
This site sponsored by the CalJustice Advisory Committee and tries to provide "low-income Californians with access to basic legal resources and attorney information."  It has topic headings such as Housing, Immigration, Seniors, Native American Issues, Disability, Consumer and Small Claims, Disability, etc.  Click on a topic, put in a zip code, and agencies are listed to help with these various subject.

Your Public Law Library
This site organizes California legal resources for "persons who choose to represent themselves in court without the help of an attorney."  It is available in several languages and has links to self-help centers, law libraries, and an introduction to legal research.

Finding Attorneys

The search for an attorney is through the West Legal Directory.  An attorney can be found by zip code or by type of practice.

The State Bar of California
This site can look up a California attorney and list the education and if any disciplinary actions have been taken against the attorney.
