Rio Hondo College Librarians. The Librarians have specifically

Environmental Protection Agency http://www.epa.gov/
The official website for the federal government agency. Includes
listing of federal environmental laws, and sections on all aspects of
pollution and environmental topics.
Friends of the Earth
USA http://www.foe.org/
FOE/USA is one of the major members of an influential, international network of
grassroots groups in 70 countries and has worked for the past 30 years
to create a healthier, more just world. Its actions have
included environmentally damaging dams and water projects worldwide,
international whaling, strip mining and oil tankers, and tax
subsidies to corporate polluters. Particularly helpful sections include:
What's New, Take Action, Featured Campaign, and Resources.
League of Conservation
Voters http://www.lcv.org/
LCV is the "political voice of the national environmental movement and
the only organization devoted full-time to shaping a pro-environment
Congress and White House." Its online National Environmental
Scorecard and Presidential Report Card are intended to
inform the public about the respective public policy decisions, voting
records, and other actions related to the environment of these two
branches of the federal government.

This site explores on a very current, up-to-date basis various "hot topics"
of interest to biological researchers, with major factors and solutions
examined for each issue.
National Resources
Defense Council http://www.nrdc.org/
One of the nation's most effective environmental action/advocacy
organization, NRDC uses "the law, science and the support of more than
1 million members and online activist to protect the planet's wildlife
and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all
living things." An online summary of "The Bush [Environmental]
Record" is available, together with many other "Reference/Links,"
including those to "Environmental Laws & Treaties," "Glossary of
Environmental Terms" and "Links By Topics." The entire site is
also available in Spanish.
Sierra Club

America's "oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots
environmental advocacy organization," the Sierra Club is "inspired by
nature in its efforts to protect our communities and the planet."
This site, updated every Friday, offers a wide range of information
and action opportunities, all facilitated by relevant links and
documents, including full-text articles from two of its publications,
Sierra Magazine (http://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/) and
The Planet
(http://www.sierraclub.org/planet/)
newsletter, that cover a wide range of environmental issues.
State PRIGs (Public
Interest Research Groups) http://www.uspirg.org/
This is an alliance of state-based, citizen-funded organizations that
advocate for public interest. The alliance seeks "to uncover
threats to public health and well-being and fight to end them, using
the time-tested tools of investigative research, media exposes,
grassroots organizing, advocacy and litigation; and to deliver
persistent, results-oriented activism that protects the environment,
encourages a fair marketplace for consumers and fosters responsive,
democratic government." A wide range of environmental issues and
concerns are addressed, with lots of information provided for each and
many action options.
Union of Concerned Scientists

Founded in 1969 by MIT faculty and students, UCS is a well regarded
"independent nonprofit alliance of more than 100,000 concerned
citizens and scientists that augment rigorous scientific analysis with
innovative thinking and committed citizen advocacy to build a cleaner,
healthier environment and a safer world." UCS concerns and
activities include those related to: Food, Vehicles, Environment,
Energy, and Security. Useful features include: News, Expertise,
Special Features, Most Popular Pages, In The Spotlight, From Our
Programs, Publications, and Take Action.

Focuses on Rachel Carson's book: Silent spring. Focusing on the
chemical poisoning of the environment. This is the story of how
one scientist's courage changed the way we think about our
world.
Witness to the future
Call number: Video 001068
Discusses how ordinary citizens transform themselves into
environmental activists. Covers problems with radioactive gases
released from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Hanford,
Washington, large doses of pesticide in California's San Joaquin
Valley, and particulates from the petrochemical and oil
industries in Louisiana's "Cancer Alley".
