National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

Founded in 1973, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is a leading, progressive civil rights organization for gays.  The NGLTF describes itself as "part of a broader social justice movement for freedom, justice and equality."  The site provides news and legislation links, and information regarding the NGLTF Policy Institute's programs and publications.

Same-Sex Marriage: A Selective Bibliography of the legal Literature

This is a frequently updated source for scholarly print and online resources about gay marriage from the Rutgers University Law Library.  The bibliography includes references to articles, books, the DOMA (Defence of Marriage Act), and information relating to specific states.  A helpful feature is the presentation "Articles Supporting Same-Sex Marriage" and "Articles Opposing Same-Sex Marriage."  Students will need to search for the articles in ProQuest or other databases, but the first section includes direct links to advocacy groups on the Web.  This site is regularly maintained, so as to remain current.

Gale Virtual Reference Library    
Type “Gay Rights” into the search field to retrieve results from reference titles including Encyclopedia of Sex and Gender, Gender Issues and Sexuality: Essential Primary Sources, and Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered History in America.

Issues & Controversies   
Employing the search word “gay” will produce four clickable tabs for resource selections, including several editorial cartoons, as well as charts with numerical data, articles, and selections extracted from reference works.

ProQuest
This popular database is best consulted after the topic has been narrowed using a database like SIRS. For example, type “gay rights movement” into the basic search box to produce thousands of current results from newspapers, journals, and magazines. Results can be narrowed by using the advanced search function to select particular resources, such as Los Angeles periodical, The Advocate.

Pro & Con
Enter the term “gay” to find Supreme Court cases relating to gay rights. Results include the arguments in the 2006 case challenging the Solomon Amendment, which denies federal funding to university campuses that restrict military recruitment. Also included in the results is a 2003 challenge to anti-sodomy laws, Lawrence, et al. vs. Texas
