THREE
STEPS IN THE RESEARCH PROCESS
|
|
NUGGETS OF
ADVICE FROM RIO LIBRARIANS
|
| STEP 1:
Decide what information
you need.
- When deciding on a topic
to research, keep it fairly simple and straightforward
and consider if information for the topic is fairly
easy to find.
- For top ideas from RHC
Library's homepage, click on RESEARCH
HELP, then on SUGGESTIONS
FOR RESEARCH PAPERS.
|
 |
- Ask yourself: what -
exactly - is your assignment? What information do you need
and how are you supposed to use this information? If
you're not sure, check your syllabus, the assignment
sheet or with your instructor.
- Also helpful, from RHC's homepage:
|
| STEP 2:
Find the information you need efficiently and
effectively.
- Ask RHC Librarians ... we're here for you and your
success!
|
 |
- BOOKS -- from RHC Library's homepage, click
on CATALOG,
then on WEBCAT.
- MAGAZINE, JOURNAL, NEWSPAPER ARTICLES - from
RHC Library's homepage, click on ONLINE
DATABASES, then on ProQuest, SIRS,
Pro & Con, etc.
- WEB SITES - from RHC Library's homepage,
click on RESEARCH
HELP, then on WEB
DIRECTORIES & PORTALS.
- OTHER INFORMATION SOURCES -- ask RHC
librarians.
|
| STEP 3:
Use the information you find well and
wisely.
- This includes citing your information per MLA or
some other style guide.
|
 |
- Read and think critically about the information you
find. Ask yourself: is the information accurate,
authoritative, etc.? For basic guidelines about
evaluating information...from RHC Library's homepage,
click on RESEARCH
HELP, then on EVALUATING
WEB SITES.
- Use style guides - for example,
MLA or APA. These show you
how to cite or document the information sources you
use.
|
| Knowing
and practicing the above makes you ... INFORMATION
COMPETENT! Information Competency is a combination of
knowledge and skills that enables us to: (1) determine
what information we need, (2) to find that information
efficiently and effectively, then (3) to use it well and
wisely. For more ... from RHC Library's homepage, click on
Information Competency. |
