Online Databases - here is your access
to thousands of articles and other information

Rio Hondo College Library subscribes to a number of electronic or "online" databases that contain journal, magazine and newspaper articles, literary criticism, biographical information, almanac and directory information, a complete encyclopedia and much more.

For journal articles, we recommend that you start with ProQuest or SIRS Researcher.  ProQuest is a comprehensive collection that offers access to scholarly full-text journals in a wide range of popular subject areas such as business, education, literature, political science, and the sciences. Included in ProQuest is a special add-on module of 301 journals in Psychology. SIRS Researcher is somewhat smaller, but all the articles are full-text and it includes a good range of small local and regional newspapers. It's sometimes hard to decide which database is more relevant to your needs. To help you decide, we have included a short summary that highlights each database - and you can always call or email a librarian with your questions!

Authentication page imageTo access any database from on-campus -- whether that be in the Library, one of the computer labs, or the Learning Assistance Center -- just click on the "On-campus users click here" link for that database.

If you are using a computer away from the college, click on the "Off-campus users click here" link. You will be taken to the authentication screen, where you need to input information that identifies you as a Rio Hondo College student. Follow the instructions on the screen, then click the "Proceed" button.

You should arrive at a screen that lists all the databases to which you have remote access. Please note that the Hours of Operation for the authentication service are  8:00am in the morning until 12:00  midnight.

This means that if you are an early riser or a midnight owl, you cannot use this one-click access method. For access BEFORE eight in the morning or AFTER midnight, you will need to click on the link for "remote access" as seen below:

Where do you get the password to view the page? Call the Reference Desk at (562) 908-3484, or come into the library and ask at the Reference Desk on the 2nd or 3rd floors. We also announce this password during orientations. The Passwords page gives username and password information for each database, which will need to be accessed separately. Again, you only need to go this route if you want access after midnight or before 8:00 in the morning.
All of our online databases give you the choice of:

  • emailing your chosen articles to yourself

  • downloading the articles to a floppy disk

  • printing the articles

There is still a great deal more to discover on the Library Web site, so let's take a better look at Guides & Instruction
